Our origins are in sound
Our founder David Goodwin worked as a sound engineer for 25 years before packing away his touring Peli and diving headfirst into Stencil. He knew that the industry was hungry for an alternative to black speakers; and that lycra socks and vinyl scrims that looked awful and compromised the sound simply weren’t it. But a beautiful, precision-fit wrap that was totally acoustically transparent? That sounded like an idea.
Today, Stencil’s mission is to make black speaker boxes a thing of the past. We want artists, venues, festivals, production companies, creative agencies and brands to see their speakers as a creative opportunity. A space that should be part of their event’s design. The speakers have to work flawlessly. And now, at last, they can look beautiful too.

Stencil is made up of a team of sound engineers, graphic designers, product developers, innovators and entrepreneurs.
Welcome to the Lab
The Stencil Audio Lab is located in Brighton & Hove.
It’s here that we design, test, manufacture and distribute every single one of our covers. Since all of the speaker companies we work with have different designs, as well as different ways of connecting and deploying their boxes, we’re constantly creating and iterating, adding to our ever growing library.
Reducing our impact
The live events industry has a responsibility to reduce its impact on the environment, and we’re striving to do everything we can to play our part.
- Our products are produced locally in the UK to reduce shipping and offshore transport
- We work on our designs and print runs conservatively, keeping waste to a minimum
- We only turn on our machines once we’ve reached a threshold number of jobs
We reuse and recycle as many elements of our covers as possible, including our covers’ straps, and since our inks are waterbased, our covers can be washed repeatedly without affecting their fire rating. We currently send our scraps and used fabrics to a recycling plant, although we’re looking into future collaborations with social projects that might be able to put our offcuts to good use.
